Analysis of CHiLL magazine

Front page

The name of the magazine is called ‘CHiLL’, an acronym of the name of the school, (Chapel high in long lane.) This gives the magazine title a more attractive name to the students. There is a lot of text on the page, which in my opinion over crowds the front cover, making it difficult to make sense. The majority of the text is written in white and in a basic, simple font; this is because the background of the magazine cover is black and red, which associates the school’s uniform – which I thought was suitable. The text is informal, including rhetorical questions to make the student readers seem involved. Some of the information is written in bullets points with headlines to make it easier for the pupil to read and understand.

The school logo is positioned in the top right hand corner of the magazine, which I thought was important. There are also four main original images which are placed on the front of the magazine, which are photographs of students and teachers. This may in itself make students want to read it to see and hear about their fellow students and teachers. Above each image is a text box with information of what each image represents. Behind the text is a star shaped text box, which I don’t think was necessary as it made the magazine ever more over crowded and unprofessional.

Contents page

The black and red themed background is continued onto the contents page, which I think looks good, as it keeps the magazine layout consistent. Only one image is featured on the contents page. I do not think it was a suitable image to use as a dance group would not suit all students, especially when it comes down to gender. The title on the contents page is large for it to stand out.

The language of the magazine is informal and chatty as it is written by young students themselves, but also uses this tone to connect and entertain the target audience. All the different page titles are short and catchy, making the article on the page more appealing to read.

Although the younger school students do not have high expectations and standards of a student written magazine, I still think this page is also unprofessional looking and over crowded.
